The 2015 SPUD Tournament (Special Populations Unified Doubles) was a great success, with a 25% increase in the “Skills & Thrills” sign ups and a 29% increase in the Unified Doubles sign ups!
The 2nd Annual SPUD Tournament was held on July 25, 2015 at Centennial Sportsplex Tennis Center in Nashville, Tennessee. With more participants and volunteers than our first tournament, we took to the courts and six teams of players and volunteer partners competed for winner and finalist status. Coming in first in the Unified Doubles were Jamie Bell & Scott Schriver, but it was a tie for the finalists, with Sean Druffel & Andy Druffel, and Andrew van Cleave & Mike Harris winning an even number of games.
For Skills & Thrills, the winner was Randee Johnson, with Colin Ransom and John Roy as finalists. However, ALL the participants were clear winners as they showed their skills with a racquet and tennis balls and worked hard to be their very best! It was a peak positive experience for everyone involved.
The tournament was sponsored by Tennis Nashville, USTA Southern, Wilson Sporting Goods, Holiday Inn Vanderbilt, Metro Parks and hpdDesign.
Special thanks to the planning committee members; Mike Hurley (Director), Trish Smith, Julie Heim, Thom Druffel and Hugh Daniel, as well as to all the volunteers who gave their time to work with a terrific group of participants!
